Cool Weather Entertaining

09/09/2010

The end of summer doesn’t mean the end of entertaining outside. Ready your outdoor living space for autumn entertaining with these little inspirations…

Change your color scheme

Swap the bright yellows, greens and aqua blues of summer for warmer autumn hues, such as chocolate brown, camel, pumpkin and golden. Changing the cushions on your patio furniture is a simple way to make a big impact, as is adding an outdoor rug in an autumnal palette. Also concentrate on small-scale changes, such as using warm-colored tablecloths and napkins.

Keep guests cozy

Particularly important if you are entertaining after sundown, be prepared to keep guests warm and comfortable. This can easily be accomplished with a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, both of which make for a nice gathering place for guests.

A smoke-free way to heat your outdoor living space is to use a patio heater. There is a wealth of options when choosing a patio heater, from the size: tabletop or one that sits on the ground; the look: everything from wicker, to copper, bronze and stainless steel; and the fuel: propane, natural gas and halogen.

Decorate with the season’s bounty

Arrange a bowl of in-season fruit, such as apples and red pears, make a wreath, or fill a large glass vase with seasonal treasures, including fruit, bright leaves or small gourds.

Using candles in fall colors and scents is an easy way to stay in step with the season. One of our favorite ideas comes from cookbook author Susan Branch, who suggests hollowing out miniature pumpkins and using them to hold votive candles. Your guests will love these small seasonal accents.

Fall fare

Cooler weather calls for heartier foods. Think beef dishes or roasted chicken, root vegetables, squash and robust red wines. Don’t forget desserts: now is the perfect time of year for an apple crumble or tart.
